H.O.R.S.E, an Overview

H.O.R.S.E is actually an acronym for a combination of casino card games played on a rotational basis at most of the reputable brick and mortar and online casinos. It also generally forms part of the tournament schedule at many of the top international mixed event poker tours, the biggest of which is, of course, the legendary World Series of Poker.

H.O.R.S.E and the World Series of Poker

The game has grown in stature in recent years and with the inordinate number of amateur poker players walking away with Holdem titles and often the unofficial brand of World Champion, the true gurus of poker are opting to hone their skills on mixed events like H.O.R.S.E.

Obviously the more accomplished players will be familiar with all forms of poker, whereas the thousands of online qualifiers who are currently winning millions of dollars on the international poker circuit will arguably only be proficient in their chosen form of the game such as Limit, no Limit and Pot Limit Texas Holdem or Omaha.

In recent years winners of the No Limit Texas Holdem Main Event at the WSOP have been rank outsiders and online qualifiers who have won their seat, accommodation and travelling expenses via online poker rooms and this has peeved the professional poker players no end. Why should they have to fork out for the large tournament buy-ins when a complete amateur who has won his seat online can compete for the World Championship title for free? The winner of the Main Event is automatically branded World Poker Champion which is a bit of a misnomer as a world champion of poker should be proficient in all forms of poker, not just the one variety.

The WSOP has taken the pro’s complaints to heart and has included a H.O.R.S.E event with a rich $50 000 buy-in at the past two editions of the tour. Only the most accomplished and skilled of players would risk the kind of buy-in the WSOP has set for the World Championship event and for once we are arguably witnessing the legitimate King of Poker being crowned!

There have been suggestions that the Main Event of the WSOP should in actual fact be either a Mixed Event or a H.O.R.S.E Event but if this does not happen in the foreseeable future the situation may arise that the H.O.R.S.E event eclipses the main event in importance and popularity.
